Body Contouring Surgery
Body contouring treats excess, loose skin and tissue of the lower body especially in the stomach and buttocks area. Patients for this procedure have had a major weight loss that has led to problems with sagging skin around certain areas of their body.
By removing this excess of loose skin, plastic surgeon Dr. Feledy can dramatically improve your figure and put the finishing touches on your weight loss efforts.
“I lost a lot of weight over a one year period. While I was happy about that, I still didn’t like how I looked as my body had changed so much with the weight gain in the first place. I found out about body contouring at Belmont and it was the missing piece.’ – W.P.*
Body Contouring FAQs
1) What is body contouring?
In most cases, body contouring is a series of surgical procedures performed at one time. Men and women who undergo body contouring (sometimes referred to as body lift surgery) want the excess skin removed from areas most affected by a major weight loss. Areas that are typically treated with body contouring are:
- The abdominal area, locally and into the lower back area
- The abdominal sides (a.k.a. the love handles)
- The buttocks, that may be low, flat or shaped unevenly
- The groin that may sag into the inner thigh
- The inner or outer thighs.
2) Why undergo body contouring?
You’ve worked incredibly hard to lose a significant amount of weight. However, you are left with residual fat deposits in problem areas. A common problem is the excess skin that remains when you were at your maximum weight. This skin has been severely stretched and damaged and has lost its elasticity. There is a very good chance this skin may never decrease on its own hindering the performance of daily activities and cause serious hygiene issues. The only way to improve the appearance of these areas is surgically removing the fatty tissues. Fortunately, Dr. Feledy provides expert body contouring in Washington DC.
Some of the most common body contouring procedures include tummy tuck, arm lift, body lift, thigh lift and liposuction. Less common procedures include:
Body Lift Surgery: This procedure combines the tummy tuck and the butt lift. Dr. Feledy works around the lower body removing the apron of loose skin and tissue. The incisions are placed within natural skin folds, which allows post-surgical scars to be well hidden. Dr. Feledy may choose to combine the body lift with liposuction to remove small areas of excess fat.
Panniculectomy: A panniculectomy is a functional operation that removes a large hanging apron of skin (pannus) from the abdomen. Patients requiring a panniculectomy often have severe hygiene issues that have resulted in infection or required surgical removal to correct these problems. Although we take aesthetic considerations into account for all of our procedures, this is not considered a cosmetic procedure.
Mons Rejuvenation: Following significant weight loss, female and male patients are often left with a sagging of the tissue that lies over the pubic bone. This region is call the mons. Fullness and sagging of this region can cause difficulty with urination, sexual function and satisfaction, and clothes fitting. Although this area may be a source of embarrassment, we commonly address this area during abdominal contouring. This area will be reduced and elevated to provide a more youthful appearance.
Extended abdominoplasty: An extended abdominoplasty is a procedure that falls between an abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) and a body lift. The incision for an extended abdominoplasty extends onto the back but does not go completely around the torso (like the body lift procedure described above). An extended abdominoplasty allows for the complete excision of larger abdominal areas and into the flank region, and lifting of the lateral thighs (but to a lesser extent than a body lift).
Upper Body Lift: Some patients have significant back rolls they want to correct with an upper body lift. For women, we will often hide this incision beneath the bra-line. For men, incision line placement is often dictated by the position of the back rolls.
3) Are you a good candidate for a body contouring?
If you’re considering a body contouring, you should be at a stable body weight, in generally good health, and be highly motivated to improve your appearance. It’s also important to have realistic expectations for the outcome of your procedure and notify Dr. Feledy if you have high blood pressure, blood-clotting issues, or tend to form excessive scars.
Most candidates for body contouring surgery are between 40 and 60 years old with good skin elasticity. If you’re considering this procedure, you should be a healthy non-smoker. It’s also important to have realistic expectations for the outcome of your procedure and notify Dr. Feledy if you have high blood pressure, blood-clotting issues, or tend to form excessive scars.
4) Are Body Contouring surgeries safe and are there any side effects?
All surgeries carry some risk of complications that can be minimized by a qualified surgeon. There are a few rare side effects, including nerve damage, blood clots, scarring, pain, swelling or heart and lung complications. As with any surgery, there is the risk of bleeding, infection and poor wound healing. Every effort is taken to ensure any risks are minimized. Be sure to ask Dr. Feledy about these risks during your consultation.
5) What happens after most Body Contouring surgeries?
Depending on the body contouring procedure, your initial recovery will take between 10 to 14 days, although some cases patients may need up to three weeks. It’s possible for larger procedures to require thin tube be put in place to prevent fluid accumulation, which is removed in seven days. During this time, you will need to get plenty of rest and limit your activity. Swelling, numbness, tenderness and a feeling of tightness are common but will subside over time. Patients should avoid strenuous activity for six weeks and exposure to the sun for several months. The doctor will provide more specific steps about your recovery from body contouring surgery.
