Washington, DC Facelift (Rhytidectomy) Surgery

A rhytidectomy, which is commonly referred to as a facelift, is a plastic surgery procedure that is designed to address the signs of aging on the lower section of the face. As he performs this procedure, Dr. Jules Feledy can raise the tissues of the jawline, jowls and neck. He can also tighten the facial muscles and skin to restore the youthful-looking facial characteristics that are frequently lost with age. Men and women in the Washington, DC, area visit Belmont Plastic Surgery to regain some of their more youthful facial features via their personalized rhytidectomy procedure. At Belmont Plastic Surgery, each patient’s treatment plan is created and then performed by Washington, DC’s, award-winning, top aesthetic and reconstructive surgeon, Dr. Jules Feledy.

Who Should Consider Having a Facelift in Washington, DC?

As the signs of aging begin to appear, an individual’s self confidence level can begin to drop. Both men and women in Washington, DC, who are interested in addressing lax facial tissue can benefit from a rhytidectomy at Belmont Plastic Surgery.

Facelift patients include:

  • Individuals who would like to use a facelift to prevent early signs of aging. These patients are usually in their late 30s and early 40s.
  • Individuals who want to address the issues that are contributing to their tired-looking, less-youthful appearance. These men and women are usually in their 40s, 50s and 60s.
  • Individuals of every skin type and ethnicity can benefit from a Washington, DC, facelift with Dr. Feledy.

The ideal candidate for a rhytidectomy is someone who:

  • Is healthy.
  • Does not use products containing nicotine.
  • Has good skin elasticity.
  • Understands the procedure and has reasonable expectations about his or her results.

How Aging Affects Facial Features

Lax facial tissues lead to droopy skin with deep creases. These facial characteristics can cause an individual to appear as if he or she is unhappy, frustrated and/or unhealthy.

A facelift is only meant to rejuvenate the lower section of the face, not to change an individual’s appearance altogether: A skilled aesthetic and reconstructive surgeon can perform this procedure by making subtle changes to restore a patient’s more youthful facial characteristics, without altering his or her overall appearance.

Are There Any Lifestyle Choices that Accelerate the Signs of Aging?

Although changes in facial characteristics should be expected as an individual ages, there are some lifestyle choices that can accelerate the aging process.

These choices include:

  • Spending time in the sun or in a tanning bed without properly protecting the skin can result in premature aging. When the skin is left unprotected, it sustains damage from the UV rays being emitted from the sun or the bed. These rays damage the skin by killing stem cells. The death of stem cells leads to thinning and wrinkling of the skin. In addition, the UV rays activate matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), which are enzymes that break down the collagen in the skin. Since collagen is the protein responsible for skin elasticity, damage from UV rays typically causes an early onset of fine lines and wrinkles.
  • Smoking cigarettes or using other products that contain nicotine. Since nicotine is a vasoconstrictor, it causes the vessels that provide the skin with the vital nutrients and oxygenated blood to narrow, which slows down the circulation process. The lack of an uninhibited blood flow makes it impossible for the skin to remain healthy, which can lead to the development of fine lines and wrinkles.
  • Alcohol consumption, caffeine intake, poor sleep habits, consuming diets high in carbohydrates and sugar are other factors that can accelerate the signs of aging. The signs of aging resulting from each of these actions can be addressed by Dr. Feledy with a personalized Washington, DC, facelift.

Other reasons for premature aging:

  • Individuals who lose a substantial amount of weight may find that they have lost some of their youthful facial features as well. The excess fat on the face stretched the skin, therefore, once that fat was eliminated, this overstretched skin became lax.
  • Illness, environmental pollutants, stress and genetic conditions can make an individual more susceptible to premature aging as well.

What Age is the Best Age to Have a Facelift?

There is not any particular age that would be considered the best for a rhytidectomy: Each person is unique and ages differently, therefore, once the signs of aging become apparent, he or she may want to consider making an appointment for a consultation with Dr. Feledy. He performs all of his consultations and procedures at Belmont Plastic Surgery.

Signs that may indicate you are a good candidate for a rhytidectomy with Dr. Feledy include:

  • Your jawline is undefined, which has resulted in the development of jowls and/or the loss of a youthful-looking chin.
  • Your facial features make you look like you are concerned or tired all the time.
  • You have lost muscle definition and skin elasticity in your neck and your face.
  • The lines that run from the base of your nose to the outside corners of your mouth (i.e., nasolabial folds) have deepened.

A Traditional Facelift in Washington, DC

Facelift procedures can last anywhere from three to six hours. During this procedure, patients receive general anesthesia or I.V. sedation (i.e., twilight anesthesia). Since the patient receives anesthesia and will most likely be returning home after the procedure, he or she needs to ask someone to drive them to and from their surgery at Belmont Plastic Surgery in Chevy Chase, Maryland. Patients should choose an individual that they trust. In addition, the driver needs to be an adult (18 years of age or older).

Some patients may need to remain at the surgery center overnight. These patients should ask someone they trust to pick them up the following day.

Patients are not permitted to drive after having anesthesia, which is why a driver is required. Also, for the safety of his patients, Dr. Feledy does not permit his patients to use any type of ride-for-hire services or public transportation following procedures that require anesthesia or sedation.

Facelift Procedure Steps with Dr. Jules Feledy, Near Washington, DC

While the patient is in pre op, Dr. Feledy may come in to make various markings on the patient’s face. These markings serve as a guide throughout the rhytidectomy. During this time, patients are encouraged to ask any last-minute questions they have.

The procedure:

1. Once the patient is comfortably asleep, Dr. Feledy will meticulously make several incisions at the temple. The incision continues downward to the front of the patient’s ear and then behind the tragus. This incision route camouflages it quite well. Next, the incision is tucked beneath the ear lobe, following the crease behind the patient’s ear before it enters into the hairline behind the ear.

2. Now that the incisions are made, Dr. Feledy takes great care as he separates the skin from the tissues that lie beneath.

3. He excises the unnecessary tissue and skin before he reshapes and sutures the remaining skin together.

Some patients receive small drains. These drains are used to prevent fluid and blood accumulation beneath the skin.

Patients will wear full facelift bandages for the initial 24 hours following their procedure.

After the initial 24 hours have passed, patients return to Belmont Plastic Surgery to have their full facelift bandages removed and a smaller dressing applied. This dressing is worn for a week. At this 24-hour, post-op, follow-up appointment, Dr. Feledy will also examine the patient’s face to ensure he or she is healing as expected.

Traditional rhytidectomy patients may have a significant amount of swelling and/or bruising: This is expected, so there is no cause for alarm.

What You Need to Know While Recovering from Your Washington, DC, Facelift

Most patients recover within 10 to 14 days, however, there are patients who need additional time (up to three weeks). As you recover, you must limit your activity and be sure to get plenty of rest. It is typical for the face to feel tight after this procedure. In addition, patients usually experience inflammation, tenderness, bruising and numb sensations.

Strenuous activity must be avoided for six weeks.

You do need to keep your head elevated, intermittently applying ice packs can decrease inflammation. You can apply ice packs to the swollen areas of your face for 15-20 minutes every hour or two. To protect your skin, the ice pack needs to be wrapped in a cloth. Ice should never be placed directly against the skin as this could cause frostbite. Try to use the ice pack every hour or so for the first three days after your facelift (while you are awake). If you follow this recommendation, you should bring the swelling down substantially.

Discomfort during the recovery process will be mild because you will either receive a prescription for pain medication or Dr. Jules Feledy will recommend an over-the-counter medication that he believes will offer you the most benefit. Tightness and numb sensations are common following facelifts. The tightness and numb sensations can continue for several months.

Patients must avoid sun exposure:

For at least six months after your rhytidectomy, if you will be spending time outside, remember to use a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15. Disregarding this recommendation could lead to hyperpigmentation (i.e., darkening) of the scars, which may be permanent. If hyperpigmentation occurs and does not subside, you will have more visible scarring, indefinitely.

A week after your rhytidectomy procedure, you will return to Belmont Plastic Surgery for your second follow-up appointment. Dr. Feledy will carefully remove your bandages and then your sutures. Most of Dr. Feledy’s patients feel well enough to return to work or school two weeks post op.
